County Demographics and Communities
Sierra County was created on April 3, 1884, named for the Sierra Del Caballos Mountain Range. Hillsboro was named the county seat in 1884. As the population declined in Hillsboro the county seat was then moved to Hot Springs which in 1950 changed its name to Truth or Consequences, NM. The county seat remains in Truth or Consequences to this day.
Sierra County is known for their wonderful climate and year round recreation activities. Sierra County claims some of the most beautiful mountains, two of the largest lakes in the State of New Mexico. Water sports, fishing, bird watching, camping, golf and other activities can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Nestled in the mountains of Sierra County lies several ghost towns that can be visited, as well as museums and Hot Mineral Springs Baths.
