Sierra County is proud to be the home of Spaceport America. The Spaceport will be host such companies as Virgin Galactic and the X-Prize Cup.

On September 26, 2006, UP Aerospace launched the first historic flight from Spaceport America. The Spaceloft XL vehicle was launched with the hopes the rocket would reach lower orbit. On April 28, 2007, UP Aerospace launched a second vehicle, the SL-2 mission, with the remains of James Doogan, (Scotty from the television show Star Trek) and of Mercury Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper on board. This vehicle reached an altitude of 72.7 miles becoming sub-orbital, becoming the first successful flight into space from Spaceport America.
