Tourism and Recreation
In Sierra County many outdoor activities are available all year round. Two of the largest lakes in the state are in Sierra County, Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo Lake. Hiking and camping can be enjoyed in two national forests with mountainous terrain. National hot springs can be found in Sierra County as well.
Some of the areas to visit are Black Range Scenic Area: Located between Kingston and San Lorenzo, magnificent scenery of the Gila National Forest can be seen on this curvy drive. Campgrounds, picnic areas are available along the drive.
The Continental Divide Trail: Hiking is accessible on NM59 northwest of Winston.
Winston/Cloride: Historic old towns with a history of mining and ranching. Winston has a general store and a post office. These communities are nestled in a valley that was once part of the Warm Springs Apache homelands.
Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo Lake: Perfect for water sports, fishing, overnight camping and boating. Perfect for year round fun on the water.
Many other activities are available, such as theater productions, shopping, hot springs mineral baths and spas and fine dining.
